Wire rope failure

Thankfully, failures of rope are rare, due to the large safety factors used in their design.  However, failure can often be catastrophic and so regular inspection is recommended.  Failures usually result from excessive load (whether continuous or shock), from poor quality material, or from degradation of the rope due to abrasionleading to excessive wear, fatigue, corrosion or a combination of those.
